Synopsis

A study of the early years of a twentieth-century poet whose greatness has been widely recognised but who appears not to fit into any particular school or tradition. Having spent the first fifteen years of his life in the Orkney Islands, Edwin Muir is perhaps the last major poet writing in English to have been brought up in a society which in many respects pre-dates the Industrial Revolution. The Orkney of Muir's boyhood was a place where a sense of community had survived from the Middle Ages when the islands were the centre of a Scandanavian earldom, where traditional beliefs, some of them from before Christian times, still affected the way people behaved, and where songs and stories still survived from a time before newspapers and schools.
