It follows her life as a student and years of incarceration in mental hospitals. First published in 1984, it won the Non-fiction Prize of the New Zealand Book Awards. She received New Zealand's highest civil honour in 1990 when she was made a Member of the Order of New Zealand. Janet Frame died in January 2004.
