Synopsis
With laparoscopic techniques firmly established as a valuable and fast-developing part of general surgery, many conventional open technique operations are being called into question. The majority of operations are now within the scope of minimal access surgery, posing a problem for the general surgeon in evaluating which is the better approach for a particular condition, especially with the limited data on laparoscopic techniques due to their recent history. The book critically evaluates open surgery against the corresponding laparoscopic technique, condition by condition: each section detailing technique, results, advantages and expectations. Surgeons at the fore of clinical practice and world experts in their field have been brought together in this one volume to present current expectations of the two approaches for each surgical condition, backed up with their own data, with the intention of allowing readers to make their own decision as to when a procedure is appropriate.
