About the Author

Jessie Kesson was born in Inverness in 1916 and spent her early childhood in Elgin with her mother (she never knew her father) until she was sent to the orphanage in Aberdeenshire. After leaving school she entered service, and in 1934 moved to a farm with her husband, who was a cottar. She combined a successful writing career with a variety of jobs, from cleaner to artist's model, and was a social worker for nearly twenty years, settling finally in London with her husband. She died in 1994.
