From the Author

The war years add up to a small part of my life and yet have provided me with huge experiences, experiences which have brought me face to face with bravery, tragedy and even humour. Never to be forgotten are the qualities of the British soldier. Mostly men who did not choose this carrer, rather had it thrust upon them. I count myself privileged to have nursed milkmen and teachers, professors and barrow boys and I have been amazed at their spirit. But I still grieve over those young men who did not live to embrace a kinder future.
