This work is best described by its subtitle: "A Series of Essays ...to Aid in the Formation of Fixed Principles in Politics, Morals, and Religion, with Literary Amusements Interspersed." There were three editions during Coleridge's lifetime. The 1818 text of The Friend is presented, with the 1809-1810 periodical version reprinted in an appendix and the 1812 revisions in footnotes.

Green fabric boards with gilt, top foredge stained red. Ribbons neatly tucked in as from publisher, appears unread. Dust jacket slightly sunned on both spines, front flap clipped on bottom, no chips or tears, light wear at corners and ends of spines.
