From the Author

Lesser-Known Aspects of Tributes
Tributes includes nearly 30 new contributions and much additional material—particularly poetry—previously buried or, in the case of Robert Lowell’s work, essentially undiscovered until now. (Harvard was unaware of the Lowell work, and corroborated its authenticity.) This includes some tough, surprising writing. The Louis Begley/Anka Muhlstein essay on Jerome Robbins was the last significant piece written with Robbins’s blessing prior to his death--by two people unusually close to this complicated man and his work. Elise Paschen’s poem takes metaphorical revenge on George Balanchine for leaving her mother, Maria Tallchief, for art and another woman. Among the other new work in Tributes is writing by Ira Berkow, Holly Brubach, Robert Caro, Susan Cheever, Robert Craft, Joan Didion, Nikki Giovanni, John Guare, Philip Johnson, Kenneth Koch, Robert Kotlowitz, Madeleine L'Engle, George Plimpton, Francine Prose, Andrew Solomon, Susan Sontag, Bernard Taper, Paul Taylor, Solomon Volkov, Wendy Wasserstein, Deborah Weisgall, Dianne Wiest and Charles Wuorinen. New works of art were contributed by Eric Carle, Francesco Clemente, James Rosenquist and Alain Vaes.
