Review

Romance rules the day in this hardback book where Susan Gordon has put together an anthology of wedding days and marriages of the great and the good. There is a wedding here for every day of the year and, whilst the book is an obvious choice for an engagement or wedding present, the book has more to offer than simply discovering whose wedding date one shares. At a time when the cost of weddings is escalating and the event is starting to resemble Christmas in its overblown commercialism and the social pressures of affording the "dream dress", the "right" rings and the "must-have" marquee, this book provides a little oasis of calm and sense to which to retreat when the wedding stress becomes too much. It is refreshing and rather comforting to read about so many happy, lasting, celebrity marriages in the face of tabloid glee at endless celebrity divorces, and despite the old adage that "happiness does not make news", here it does make for interesting reading. Passionate, amusing or poignant, the stories range from the romance of Grace Kelly and her prince to the farce of Napoleon and Josephine's wedding night, complete with overprotective pug dog. An absorbing read and a delightful gift.--Claire Aloysia Ritson

From the Author

Surprising, humorous & romantic wedding details revealed!
Is your wedding day July 4th? You share that date with Irish author James Joyce, and Nora Barnacle, who tied the knot 27 years after they ran off together. Are you planning to be married on March 9th? It also was the wedding day of Napoleon & Josephine, who had to spend their wedding night with her nasty pug dog! May 1st was the day Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu. Long before Princess Di was called "The Queen of Hearts," that appellation was given to King James I's daughter Princess Elizabeth, who got married in a week-long celebration in 1613.

Every day is somebody's wedding day, as well as the anniversary of famous couples in history. From Victoria & Albert to Paul & Linda McCartney ... from Robin Hood & Maid Marian to Elizabeth Barrett & Robert Browning, few couples ever forget their wedding day.

I've always been fascinated by stories about great marriages; "Wedding Days" contains hundreds of tales, on couples' exact wedding days.

There have always been parents who think no one's good enough for their "perfect" child. Brides and grooms have always had last minute jitters. Step-parenting is nothing new - author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote "Treasure Island" as a way of winning his new stepson's affection. Women over forty can find true love, like Beatrix Potter, and Agatha Christie. And some people don't find their ideal mate until their second or third trip down the aisle.

Let these famous couples' words become your good-luck expressions. Name your kids after them, use the same colors at your wedding, eat the same foods, and honeymoon to the same places.

More than 350 years ago, Sir Richard Fanshawe told his wife, Anne: "My life and fortune shall be thine, and every thought of my heart." You, too, should be so lucky!
