Review

Praise for Richard Powers: 'If Powers were an American writer of the nineteenth century... he'd probably be the Herman Melville of Moby-Dick. His picture is that big.' Margaret Atwood, New York Review of Books 'Nothing less than brilliant' John Updike 'A writer of blistering intellect... [Powers is] a novelist of ideas and a novelist of witness, and in both respects, he has few American peers.' Los Angeles Times 'There is no contemporary American writer quite like Richard Powers...It is rare to find a novel as intellectually and emotionally engaging as this.' Guardian 'A wonderful song of triumph...In the American literary world, Richard Powers' name is spoken of in the same breath as Don Delillo and Jonathan Franzen...The Time of Our Singing is a resounding affirmation of how much the modern novel can contain.' Glasgow Herald 'One of the few younger American writers who can stake a claim to the legacy of Pynchon, Gaddis, and DeLillo.' * The Nation *

Book Description

The backlist of Richard Powers, one of America's most important novelists, moves to Atlantic Books.

On the eve of World War One, three young men are captured by photographer August Sander. Looking at the camera, dressed in suits against a background of an empty field, they become an iconic image. But what happens to these men after the shutter falls and how is the story of an enduring image influenced by forgotten histories? A novel of obsession in the age of technology.

Boards & Cloth with Dustjacket. 2nd Printing. Powers well received and somewhat uncommon book in hardcover about three stepbrothers, that was inspried by the beautiful photograph by the great photographer August Sander. The photograph is reproduced on the verso of the half title pg. There is a very faint hardly noticeable stain (if I didn't mention it one would be hard put to see it) on the very bottom of the front edge which has caused some very faint and again hardly noticeable rippling to some of the corners of the last pages, not affecting the text at all. There is also a spot of soiling to the top edge. The dustjacket has a touch of shallow chipping to the top and bottom of the spine panel and some like wear to the edges. This is a vg. copy in a vg. dustjacket with all the defects mentioned, and a very reasonable priced copy of an early printing of the book. Book. Seller Inventory # 010799

This photograph has provided the impetus for Richard Powers's haunting and accomplished novel and plays central but varying roles in the three interrelated stories of which it is composed.
