"'His name is Tuan.' I pushed the cup toward him. Tea is a big thing in Vietnam and places like that. Everybody knows it.
'You like it here yet?' Caroline asked him, taking it slow.
'Yes,' he told her, waited a second, and then added, 'no kidding.'
Suzanna gagged. 'No kidding?' She looked at me with her mouth hanging open. Nothing she could say. This was going much better than I could have hoped. Quint thought he was being funny, but the kid was almost a Harvey clone already."
Harvey Trumble, who dreamed of glory in Gilson's side-splitting Harvey, the Beer Can King, here embarks ona heroic mission. His assignment: Mold newcomer Tuan Nguyen into an American. His method: Follow the Leader. His results: Well . . . Scrambled!

A Vietnamese woman suggested the book's setting.
Before starting this novel, I filled pages of notebooks with stories told to me by Vietnamese refugees. One woman, who had been here for several years, said that I shouldn't assemble my characters in Chicago, as I had planned to, but in a small town. She had come straight from Vietnam to a farming community just outside Lincoln, Nebraska, and, while she felt the culture shock had been enormous, she had learned English quickly and had loved becoming a part of middle America. So, I set my story in Pittsfield, Illinois, a town of two thousand, where I had lived when I was twelve years old. As I describe in my book, Pittsfield has a handsome Victorian courthouse with a statue on its fine front lawn of a pig. On the base of the statue, it says, "Pittsfield, Pork Capital of the World." Also the setting for my first book, "Harvey the Beer Can King," Pittsfield was just the place for Tuan Nguyen and his family to come face to face, for the first time, with Halloween, snowpeople, prejudice, and pumpkin pie.
