Recommended in the Brandon/Hill selected list of print books and journals for the small medical library - April 2001 & 2003This handbook is a practical and detailed "how-to" guide to every aspect of the psychiatric interview. The book begins with general principles of effective interviewing, including techniques for approaching threatening topics, improving patient recall, and dealing with challenging patients. Subsequent sections focus on obtaining the psychiatric history, interviewing for diagnosis, and interviewing for treatment. Coverage includes strategies for memorizing DSM-IV, assessing specific disorders, educating the patient, and negotiating a treatment plan, as well as guidelines for writing up the results of the session. An appendix section includes data forms, patient education handouts, and information that practitioners often need to access quickly. This quick-reference material also appears on handy pocket cards that accompany the book

"I found this book to be user friendly and quite practical. Handy mnemonics appear throughout the book to help readers recall essential concepts, and the author goes to great lengths to tailor information to his audience so that it is not overwhelming. Case examples are productive, and though some detail is omitted for the sake of brevity, they remain effective in highlighting important components. Overall, this is a book I will recommend to those who are new to the field."
