Review
A milestone in Latin American fiction. (Observer)
Novel of the year ... A brilliant portrait of a hopeless Peruvian revolutionary, it also happens to be technically breathtaking. (The Times)
Tension is ... tightened to the point where one reads on at a galloping pace ... The scope, size and treatment of the book mark it out as another major South American success. (Daily Telegraph)
Llosa's feeling for the pain of his country is as powerful as ever but the more moving for being elegant and elaborate, even cool, in its expression ... A masterly and moving novel. (New Statesman)
An excellent and courageous novel ... Vargas Llosa deserves his place among the best Latin American writers. (New Society)
A terrific novel. (The Times)
In The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta, Mario Vargas Llosa has created a glittering trompe l'oeil of a novel about the revolutionary temperament - and the nature of fiction. (Michiko Kakutani New York Times)
Exciting and moving fiction. (The Atlantic)
