his career as an illustrator for Sports Illustrated in the early 1950s. By the mid-1960s, his photos were being exhibited in museums across America. The photos speak for themselves, but sports fans will find a special significance in the figures they record--Muhammad Ali, Mickey Mantle, Vince Lombardi--and the events--Superbowls, the World Series, the Olympics and more.

Gebraucht, aber sehr gut erhalten. - Preface by John Szarkowski -- Introduction by David Halberstam -- The Photographs -- List of Exhibitions, Books -- Afterword by Robert Riger. // "Robert Riger was the preeminent artist of a golden age of American sports," David Halberstam notes in his introduction to this collection of Riger's classic photographs. "He was good because he knew what he was doing, understood the games, understood both the talent and the passion of the athletes." Riger's photographs are remarkable testaments to his love for sports, his acute insight into what it is that athletes do, and his uncanny knack for locating the decisive moment in a play or gesture. They record the actions of a special kind of American hero: Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Johnny Unitas, Vince Lombardi, Wilt Chamberlain, Wilma Rudolph, Frank Gifford, Greg Louganis, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, Billie Jean King, Ted Williams, Seattle Slew. Professional football was Riger's first love, followed by baseball, but he was an avid admirer of all sports, and his career kept him close to the game. He began his professional life making pencil- and water-color drawings for Sports Illustrated. He took photographs while doing research for the drawings, and the photographs demonstrate his artist's eye for composition and movement. Soon they, too, became a regular feature in the magazine. Riger began working for ABC's Wide World of Sports in the early sixties, but he continued to photo-graph the athletes and events he covered, and his work was exhibited in museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. "He seems to have sensed that the action which was taking place in front of him was not merely sport," Halberstam writes, "but a form of art as well, a kind of modern American ballet performed with grace, power, and finesse.
