Synopsis
Erica is a trainer who knows everything about horses, much about the young people who ride them, and loves both. Lex, recently hired as supervisor of security, knows nothing about horses and little about love or security. What they come to know about each other is of the essence in this splendid new novel.
In fact, several kinds of love - or lust - are at work: a rider's love for the thrilling, dangerous sport of guiding a horse over high fences; overbearing parents' love for the child who comes through with ribbons; oddly assorted passions in the swirling, socially mixed bag of the horse world, a community constantly on the move, in search of prestige, prizes, adventure - and money.
There is also a deadly menace - prompted by greed, someone is maiming or killing the magnificent, highly insured animals. And the predator is ready to murder others who move through the shadowy stables, behind the rings of bright lights and the glamorously lit froth of parties.
Kai Maristed wonderfully illuminates that equine life, showing us trainers and stable hands, veterinarians and show announcers, wealthy owners and illegal aliens. We see the competitions, the courage, the secret lovemaking in cheap motels, the fabled and famous farms - the lives of those for whom the horse is a hobby or a diversion, those for whom the horse is an obsession and vocation and its world a place of endless beauty, suspense, and mystery.
