Synopsis

Cuing In contains reading and writing activities designed to aid adult learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) in attaining literacy in English. It may be used as an independent text, as a prelude to Write on Cue, or in conjunction with Write on Cue. Cuing In is suitable for use in a whole group setting, in a multilevel classroom, or in one-on-one tutoring. Cuing In is appropriate for use as a first reading and writing text for students who are unfamiliar with the English language. The background and levels of these students will vary. Some of them may be at a level of pre-literacy; that is, they are not literate in their own language and do not understand the concept that oral speech may be represented in written form. Other students may be illiterate in their own language as well as in English but have some understanding of the written word representing the spoken word but, perhaps for lack of opportunity for formal education in their home country, have not attained literacy. Literacy is necessary to truly function in our society, and in this sense Cuing In is a functional text. For this reason, it is not a student workbook but rather a series of lessons presented on black-line masters that may be photocopied. There are two advantages to this system. One is that you may distribute the copies to suit the needs of the students. If a student has difficulty in a particular area, you, after tutoring that student, may redistribute the appropriate handouts. In this way, the students does not feel the embarrassment of having to erase and do the lesson again. Another advantage is that you can control the distribution of the handouts so that students will not proceed too quickly. The masters may also be used to make transparencies for an overhead projector.
