How box-office grosses became part of our culture
It's exciting to be able to greet readers and browsers of "The Movie Business Book" courtesy of Amazon.com.
Thanks for visiting---this means we probably share a love of movies and a curiosity about grosses, deal-making and where the money goes. In fact, there has been a groundswell of interest about movie dollars in general. This can be traced to "Entertainment Tonight," which popularized multi-million dollar budgets and grosses in their coverage. Soon, newspapers and local TV began reporting weekend box-office contests. Now it's part of our culture.
This second edition of "The Movie Business Book" is especially popular on college campuses where more film courses are featuring business procedures in their core material than ever before. Also, there is a growing readership overseas, especially in Germany and Korea.
There's nothing like going out to the movies. Here in West Los Angeles, my girlfriend and I usually go to AMC Theatres for first-rate projection, sound and popcorn. Or to Laemmle Theatres for independent- style pictures. On weekends, we go back and forth between Century City and Third Street in Santa Monica, checking what's sold out as a barometer of movie-going. For advance word on how pictures will open, I ask my students at the USC School of Cinema-Television.
For great fun, try the Third Street Promenade where some 20 screens are within walking distance. Before or after the movie, enjoy the beautiful walkway of shops and cafes, great for people-watching.
Thanks again for stopping by; see you at the movies!
Producers, directors, screenwriters, agents, editors, financiers, distributors, and exhibitors talk about the practical and business aspects of making motion pictures.
