Moses Mendelssohn, through the brilliance of his writing, assailed the barriers erected by both Jew and Gentile and became a primary force enabling Jews to move into the mainstream of European culture and society. While he has been generally associated with the emergence of Reform Judaism and its concomitant assimilationist trends in Germany, this volume demonstrates that he combined an uncompromising religious traditionalism with a nearly all~embracing intellectual liberalism. Eva Jospe has provided the translations; much of the material appears for the first time in English. The selections, arranged by topic, give particular emphasis to freedom of thought, separation of church and state, and the distinction between religious practice or law and religious belief. In addition, many of the excerpts are personal in nature, throwing light on Mendelssohn's fascinating personality, on his friendships with many of the great figures of the period, and on the life of Jews at that time.
