Synopsis

Thomas Pynchon's extraordinary tour de force...set in WW2, an exploration of the forces behind the scenes that shaped that war and shaped our lives ever since. Erudite, searingly funny, insightful with passages of great poetic beauty.

Review

"The best seller described as the kind of Ulysses which Joyce might have written if he had been a Boeing engineer with a fetish for quadrille paper" (Irish Examiner)

"Pynchon’s masterpiece." (John Sutherland Guardian)

"This stunner is already classed with Moby Dick and Ulysses. Set in Europe at the end of WWII, with the V2 as the White Whale, the novel's central characters race each other through a treasure hunt of false clues, disguises, distractions, horrific plots and comic counterplots to arrive at the formula which will launch the Super Rocket... Impossible here to convey the vastness of Pynchton's range, the brilliance of his imagery, the virtuosity of his style and his supreme ability to incorporate the cultural miasma of modern life" (Vogue)

"Pynchon leaves the rest of the American lierary establishment at the starting gate...the range over which he moves is extraordinary, not simply in terms of ideas explored but also in the range of emotions he takes you through" (Time Out)

"Entering this enormous novel is like buying a ticket for the ghost train and plunging into a world of metaphysical illusion, where you must forget earlier notions about life and letters and even the Novel" (Financial Times)

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition; Sixth Printing. First edition, stated sixth printing, July, 1973. Very good or slightly better in like dust jacket. Top edge has small remainder dot and former owner bookplate is on the lower left front pastedown fully covered by front DJ flap. Upper right front blank fly has heavy erasure; it appears a former owner name and address where in that area. Top edges of boards have small dings about an inch out from spine, not a major issue. 1st issue dustjacket with the $15 price, the code 0273 on the front flap, and the SBN number in white on the back panel. A nice example of this scarce classic with very minor shelf wear. Gravity's Rainbow is an epic postmodern novel written by Thomas Pynchon and first published on February 28, 1973. The narrative is set primarily in Europe at the end of World War II and centers on the design, production and dispatch of V-2 rockets by the German military, and, in particular, the quest undertaken by several of the characters to uncover the secret of a mysterious device named the "Schwarzgerät", which will be installed in a rocket with the serial number "00000." Frequently digressive, the novel subverts many of the traditional elements of plot and character development, traverses detailed, specialist knowledge drawn from a wide range of disciplines, and has earned a reputation as a "difficult" book. In 1974, the three-member Pulitzer Prize jury on fiction supported Gravity's Rainbow for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. However, the other eleven members of the board overturned this decision, branding the book "unreadable, turgid, overwritten, and obscene. " The novel was nominated for the 1973 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and won the National Book Award in 1974. Since its publication, Gravity's Rainbow has spawned an enormous amount of literary criticism and commentary, including two reader's guides and several online concordances, and is widely regarded as Pynchon's magnum opus. ; 8vo. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. ] Viking "first" statement on the copyright page + NAP (no additional printings) but this is the Canadian Book Club Edition with un-priced dj flap and a small maple leaf impressed into the back cover at the lower edge near the spine. Hardback, tall octavo, appx 5 7/8 x 8 3/4 inches (15.1 x 22.2 cm), weighs in at 2 pounds 2 ounces (964 grams), bound in full red-orange cloth with front cover blind stamp & spine titling in red, 760 pages, VG or better in like dj (dj now in protective mylar). Book itself clean and tight, no names, no writing, no foxing, no hinge discoloration, barely much at all for any general wear (very light bump lower corner back cover about unnoticeable + very small bump crinkle on the front joint at heel of spine). DJ clean, no corner clips, nice interior flaps, barely any spine fading, front panel quite nice w/o being flawless, rather minor surface rubbing spine and back panel, two very small edge splits heel of spine & a short (5/16ths inch) edge split lower edge back cover. Repair has been neatly made to the result of a small bindery flub (and 4 or 5 step-by-step photos are available of the repair process). Rear pastedown (beneath the rear interior dj flap) had not been fully glued into place along the top edge incl the top corner which had resulted in a small top corner of the pastedown somehow being folded under and stuck to the rear board by the pastedown glue. That small corner had to be freed and cleaned up (still shows the fold-under crease & a little discoloration that are not visible except when examining beneath the dj flap) + the rear free endpaper had adhered to the fold-under by a tiny spot of glue very near the rfep's fore-edge and about a 1/2 inch down from its top edge. The rfep popped loose easily with almost no visible after-effects other than an appx 1/8th inch surface thin visible when held up to the light. Due to size International order will require additional shipping charges. RWR5 Fiction Literature. Seller Inventory # 07460
