Excerpt from Sequel to the Spelling Book
Tm; design in preparing this work has been, to furnish schools with a suitable book for learning the meaning of words, at the same time with their orthography and pronunciation. The common school dictionary, sometimes used for this pur pose, exhibits most of the words in the language, pronounced and defined. But its promiscuous arrangement of common, technical, obsolete, and unimportant words, the want of sim plicity in its definitions, together with other objections that might be enumerated, render it a book ill adapted to the use for which this is intended.
