La Chanson de Roland is a tale of the great Emperor Charlemagne, of his treacherous brother-on-law Count Ganelon, and of the courageous Counts Roland and Olivier, locked in struggle with the Moors in Spain. The Depiction of jealous hatred and deception as Ganelon betrays the French to their enemies is in sharp contrast with the portrayal of Roland and Olivier's selfless bravery in the face of overwhelming odds as they battle the Moors at Roncevaux.
