Excerpt from Syllabus of Lectures on the History of the British Empire, Vol. 1: Colonial Policy, India and Other Asiatic Dependencies
English possessions may be logically divided into dependencies and protectorates.
Dependencies are those possessions in which the majority of the inhabitants from climatic reasons must always be of alien races.
Protectorates are those countries in which white men can live and work, and, having become a majority of the population, govern them selves.
