Excerpt from Das Alte Rom: Erklärender Text zu den Tafeln Xva und Xvb
In der Geschichte der Stadtentwicklung lassen sich leicht mehrere Perioden die dem allmählichen Wachse der politischen Macht ent sprechen unterscheiden. Die erste schliesst mit der Erbauung der sog. Servianischen Mauer und entspricht der Periode der Entwickelung Roms innerhalb Latiums die zweite endet mit der Zeit Cäsars und entspricht der Zeit der Umwandlung Roms in einen ganz Italien und das ganze Bassin des Mittelmeeres umfassenden Staat die dritte um fasst die Zeit der ersten Kaiser die Periode der Befestigung des Weltstaates und endigt mit Septimius Severus, die vierte dauert bis zum V. Jahrh., in dem der Verfall endgültig eintritt.
