Azara, in addition to his scientific pursuits, was tasked by the Spanish Crown with determining the most advantageous frontier between the two nations. His observations regarding the natural history of South America are scientifically valuable. However, it is his conclusions about how the colonial borders should be established that make this book of enduring interest to historians. His proposed demarcation of the frontier was prescient; had his advice been heeded by Spain, it is likely that future conflict with Portugal could have been avoided.
