Excerpt from The Idiomatic Study of German
Perception and application mark the two important stages in the acquisition of language. First the student perceives, he then imitates and lastly he applies.
According to these two principal divisions, perception and application, I have written. And arranged this work. The first part consists of lessons, which the teacher's voice will impress upon the pupil's mind, as a gradual introduction into the spirit of the idiom. Commencing with the first lesson, the teacher slowly and distinctly pronounces the first sentence he then interprets it, and in this simple and natural way teaches the pupil to understand the idea which the sentence expresses. The pupil only listens; he is not allowed to use any textbook during this auricular training. His whole attention is directed to the sound which the teacher fastens upon his ear. Not until the sound is fully perceived by the student and instantly recalls to his mind. The idea which it represents, should the teacher proceed to the following sentence. He is guided in his course by the pupil who after each sentence, read by the teacher in German, gives the interpretation in his mother-tongue. A gradual increase in rapidity of utterance, un interrupted reading and constant review will soon accustom the student's ear to continuous sound and connected discourse.
