Synopsis

Excerpt from The Tragedy of Lord Kitchener

I had known Lord Kitchener for some years. He had written to me frequently upon military subjects, and there were two occasions in his life which mattered much to him when we came into personal contact. Perhaps this was a reason why, in Sep tember, 1914, he asked me to go to France. I did so, and from that time until his death I remained there on and off at his request, journeying often across the Channel when ever he desired to see me.

My connection with the French people was a close one, knit by ties of blood. Since the Easter holidays of 1870, which I spent with a near relative in Paris who lived in the Rue Daru, close to the Russian church - when as a schoolboy I remember being present at a ball at the Tuileries given by Napoleon III. - I had never forgotten the sorrows of that year and the loss of the provinces to which my mother belonged.
