The numbers are in reality units, denoting the number of generations in a descent, enabling the reader to trace an ascent with little trouble, and also showing the nearness of relationship. No. 234567 would be a cousin to No. 234557, and No. 224567 would be several removes from 136875, and No. 123 would be a much earlier generation than 1347825. Numbers are thereby indefinitely reserved for unknown heirs.
