It will be perceived that these remarks allude to very remote periods of time, perhaps long anterior to the existence of any portion of the human race on this continent. That important changes in the physical condition of our globe have for a long succession of epochs, and do still take place, there is undeniable testimony, although the life of man is too short to make much progress in a knowledge of these changes, except by availing himself of the united experience of past generations of men who in their day and generation have made record of such facts as nature has presented for their observation. That this river has pursued its present channel for a long period of time, there are abundant marks of unquestionable evidence.
