Crop plant resistance to pests and diseases continues to be a prominent feature of modern agriculture. The study of host plant resistance involves not only the genetics of the host but, increasingly, the genetics of viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens. The contributors to this book all have something to say about the genetic basis of interaction. In recent years the study of pathogenesis has been advanced by molecular biology and some contributions review progress in this work. Others deal with the formal genetics and the nature of the response to crop breeding for resistance. As the prospect of improving crops by direct genetic intervention in the form of DNA transformation moves closer, the foundation work reported in these chapters will be important in judging progress and opportunities.
