About the Author
François-Marie Arouet, dit Voltaire, né le 21 novembre 1694 à Paris, ville où il est mort le 30 mai 1778 (à 83 ans), est un écrivain et philosophe français qui a marqué le xviiie siècle et qui occupe une place particulière dans la mémoire collective française et internationale. Figure emblématique de la philosophie des Lumières, chef de file du parti philosophique, son nom reste attaché à son combat contre le fanatisme religieux, qu’il nomme « l’Infâme », pour la tolérance et la liberté de pensée. Anticlérical et déiste en dehors des religions constituées, son objectif politique est celui d’une monarchie modérée et libérale, éclairée par les « philosophes ». Intellectuel engagé au service de la vérité et de la justice, il prend, sur le tard, seul et en se servant de son immense notoriété, la défense de victimes de l’intolérance religieuse et de l’arbitraire dans des affaires qu’il a rendues célèbres : Jean Calas, Pierre-Paul Sirven, chevalier de La Barre, comte de Lally.
