This sentence-to-paragraph-level worktext with readings highlights the complete writing process in relation to key rhetorical modes. Students learn the three stages of exploring, experimenting, and gathering information; writing the controlling idea, developing supporting details, and organizing content; and writing, revising, and editing. Comprehensive coverage of the basics enables students to develop sentences and paragraphs that are both well-structured and grammatically correct. The authors juxtapose sentence-level work with freewriting so that students gradually advance to writing full paragraphs and essays.
- Learning Objectives appear at the beginning of each chapter to identify the skills under review. Later, students can revisit the list to conduct a quick self-check and determine how far they have progressed.
- Microtheme exercises at the beginning of each chapter encourage freewriting so that students write about engaging topics without feeling pressured. After completing the chapter, students correct any mistakes in their work to demonstrate their mastery of the content and the Learning Objectives.
- The chapter on reading-related writing appears at the beginning of the text to stress how reading other texts forms the basis for most college writing. Students learn about underlining, annotating, outlining and summarizing outside sources.
