Synopsis

Are creditors hassling you? Does the financial hole you’ve dug yourself just seem to get deeper and deeper? Not sure what to do next? I know what you’re going through. As they say, I’ve been there – done that! When you decide it’s time to bite the bullet and take the steps necessary to cure your own situation, you need to educate yourself on the bankruptcy process. But beware! Your attorney may be as manipulative as your creditors! As you read about my journey down the bankruptcy path, you’ll be alerted to the many issues that can arise, even (especially) with an attorney. I’ve also included links to websites that I found extremely helpful. Sometimes unfortunate circumstances create unique opportunities; opportunities to learn and to help. It's important for me to not only learn from my past financial mistakes, but also to help others through the knowledge I've gained. This book is not intended to lead you through the steps of filing for bankruptcy. There are lots of books out there that will do that. Rather, this book will show you some of the pitfalls of filing. My hope is that you can learn from my experience and save yourself frustration, money and time. After reading this book, you'll be aware of what you need to ask your own attorney (if you use one) and what to watch for, as well as some tips for helping get you through the process. I kept notes throughout the process of my bankruptcy. Once it became obvious to me that I would have to take a pro-active approach in order to not get screwed, I decided I would also journal my thoughts and feelings along with the notes. (And by pro-active, I mean I basically had to do the heavy lifting [means test] myself.) Putting my experience into book form is my attempt to help others with the knowledge I gained. The writing reflects my emotions during this process. I didn't sugar-coat anything. There is some offensive language. I don't include it to shock you or offend you. I include it because that's me. That's what I felt, thought, did and said. It sure wasn't funny at the time, but while editing this book, I came to realize, whether intentional or not, some of this stuff is pretty funny. I must have inherited Mom's quick wit. Well, it is what it is - that's me, and you're getting it straight from the heart. One thing I'd like you to remember is to NOT be despaired. You are not alone-over one and a half million people file for bankruptcy protection every year. Many people have filed bankruptcy and come out on top: Walt Disney, Donald Trump, Abe Lincoln, Henry Ford, Milton Hershey and even Larry King. You may not get your face on a coin, your name on a chocolate bar or your own news show, but it's not the end of the world either. Choose to make your bankruptcy the end of your financial worries and the beginning of a new financially responsible you. For some it may be easy, but for others (like me), it will be a test of fortitude. I will show you, through the details of my personal story, how convoluted the process can be, even with an attorney. You'll read about the run-around I got from the law firm (Dewey, Screwum & Howe). While some names have been changed, the events are true and just as they happened, believe it or not. My hope for you is that by learning what I went through, you can avoid the same hassles. I'm glad I finally did it. I'm glad it's over and I now can start rebuilding my life. Sometimes filing bankruptcy just can't be avoided. Please be smart and don't try to save a sinking ship. If it must be done, it must be done. I promise you, it's never as bad as it seems and more people have used this legal option than you would ever imagine. Many of your friends and co-workers have probably either filed or thought about filing. Your credit rating will bounce back after bankruptcy, probably faster than it ever would if you continue to pay your bills late. If you decide to file, just gather your courage, take a deep breath, and begin your journey.
