Synopsis

The true story of a woman's journey into deep depression, with the sometimes-amusing tales of the people who shared her journey. There's the man who thought he was a tree, the man who thought he was John Lennon, and the other patients in a psychiatric unit who shared her experience. From Socks to Insanity tells the stories of those who cut and burned themselves, desperate for attention - and the equally strange psychiatric professionals who dealt with these people every day. Patsy Scott's story is a must-read for those struggling with depression and for the family members and friends who try to understand and help them.

About the Author

Many people think that those who commit suicide are selfish, taking the easy way out and leaving their loved ones to suffer and grieve. But author Patsy Scott thinks many suicidal people just want to stop the pain. They can't see the pain ever going away, and they can't imagine living the rest of their lives with it. Patsy Scott was often hospitalized and committed to psychiatric institutions during the years she suffered with mental illness. "I would think about ending my life when eating my breakfast in the morning, again as I showered, and more as I walked to work. I just couldn't stop the thoughts and I was so tired." Patsy Scott no longer self-mutilates or attempts suicide. Though she still lives with depression, it's well treated on medication. "I imagine I will be on medication for the rest of my life," she says. "It's a small price to pay to be well." She has gone back to school in Accounting; she left New Zealand in 2004 and lives with her husband and daughter and five dogs in North Carolina.
