From the Author

Why I wrote "Catching Fire"
I first thought of writing a book about firefighters because I think they're amazing people; I can't imagine going into a burning building once, let alone doing it for a living. But when I started researching, I found another reason: there's almost nothing written about them for young people, except "big red truck" books for little kids. Yet these days firefighting involves a lot of advanced science and computer technology. Read this book if you want the answers to questions like:

* Who was the best-dressed firefighter at the Great Fire of London, 300 years ago?

* Why is the steering wheel on an airport firetruck sometimes in the middle?

* When do firefighter drop little balls out of airplanes?

* What does it mean when the dog sits down?

I think this stuff is fascinating; I hope you do too.
