I re-read this book after my wife's sudden death.
This book, Bearing Witness, came out two weeks after the sudden death of my wife, Jishu Holmes, at the age of 57. The book is in part about the importance of bearing witness to all our joys and suffering, plunging into situations of fear and sadness without holding back. As soon as I received the advance copy I began to read the book I had written every morning, while I sat with Jishu’s picture and listened to the music that she had loved. It was like reading the book not just with new eyes, but with a new heart. I read, grieved, and cried. I also found that I was appreciating the teachings of the book in a new and more profound way than before, when I had put them down on paper. The book felt real; it spoke to my heart.
I hope it speak to yours as well. May we continue to bear witness and make peace, in our hearts and in all the world.
The founder of a group called The Zen Peacemaker Order outlines ways of making peace through powerful stories of people who have made peace with themselves, their addictions, and their families through self-honesty and compromise. Reprint. 15,000 first printing.
