Synopsis

There have been terrible tragedies and disasters in history - natural disasters, such as the earthquake in Japan in 1923, the avalanche that demolished the remote village of Blons in the Alps, or the killing London smog. There have been one in a million accidents with tragic results, as in the sinking of the Titanic, the collision of two planes over the Grand Canyon, and the crashing of a plane into the Empire State Building. Human failing and negligence have contributed to the total; the coal mine disaster in Denbighshire and the fire at the Coconut Grove Club indeed in tragedy for hundreds. Freak accidents have ended in enormous destruction and loss of life - a spark from a household chimney blew up an entire bomb factory and a small fire in a cloakroom engulfed and destroyed the Crystal Palace.
