Mr. Mitchell was a major contributor to monetary policy and to banking systems during the latter half of the 20th century. He was a pioneer in the development of electronic funds transfer systems.In his personal life, Governor Mitchell was a devoted family man and avid collector of modern art. He treated all of the members of his very large family with love and care. He encouraged young people to participate fully in life's joys and responsibilities. He consistently emphasized the value of education and the need for integrity in all of life's pursuits.

Mary Mitchell received her formal education at the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.She was the wife of George Mitchell from November 1964 until his death in January 1997.She lives at Greenspring Village, a retirement community in Springfield, Virginia.
