Synopsis

"Walls of Silence" is a wild rollercoaster ride from the drama of its opening pages to its breathless and shocking conclusion. It marks the stunning debut of an important new thriller writer for the twenty-first century. From his office on Wall Street, Fin Border's future looks good. A young attorney, he's bound for partnership in a British law firm set to merge with its massively powerful US cousin in the Rockefeller Center. As far as he's concerned, his life is all about the future, not the past. But an ambiguous invitation from JJ Carlson, friend, client and one of Wall Street's players, proves just how fragile Fin's existence really is. After five short minutes, Fin is staring at a scene of carnage on the FDR Drive and the wreckage of his own career and life in New York. Only Carol Amen, senior in-house counsel with JJ's former employer, seems to offer any chance of survival. But even the deal she proposes is a journey that he had long hoped never to take...

Review

Philip Jolowicz's first thriller, Walls of Silence, rejuvenates the legal thriller by having its young hero prove as unexpectedly competent at violence, when it is forced on him, as he is at unravelling complex financial crookedness. Fin Border thinks he is just a witness when his client and friend JJ drives an expensive new car off an overpass; he soon finds out that JJ had bought the car with Fin's money and credit and that he is being pursued through the courts by JJ's victims. All this, a new love affair and demands from his superiors that he go for them to Bombay, where the father he had come to dislike died in mysterious circumstances--Fin has no idea how much trouble he is in, and how much worse it is liable to get each time he tries to understand it. Jolowicz writes well and atmospherically about India's slums, temples and Victorian offices, but he does not take it for granted either that everyone knows what high-powered Manhattan life feels like; this is an ingenious and viscerally exciting thriller, which takes the trouble to make us see the world through the eyes of its sensitive and intelligent hero. --Roz Kaveney
