Review

The man known as Perry served his country once--a salesman with few scruples, he was persuaded to finger an Iranian biochemical warfare plant. Vahid Hossein, the Anvil, serves his country and his religion as assassin, or, in his own eyes, executioner. What stops Seymour's thriller from being a crude exercise in Western apologetics is the fact that both sets of values are given real weight. The hardbitten professionals who take on the job of protecting Perry have to come to terms with the fact that this amateur and crook has displayed more courage than most of them have ever had to, and Hossein is ultimately betrayed by an ecstatic love of nature that is one of his more redeeming features. Seymour is good on the personal interactions of suburbia-- ironically, given that Perry is simply unprepared to run away from everything he knows, he becomes scapegoat for a community that feels he has put it at risk by being there.

Weakened in places by some rather crude ironies and coincidences, Seymour's book sets up some interestingly opposed models of the point of intelligence work. This is a good if flawed thriller, whose slight weakness is perhaps that it tries to do too many things well. --Roz Kaveney
