Tiny Major Nick Little, the old soldier, is sure he's dying: the Bigg's cat, Hildy, accidentally ran over him. He wants his "best friends" from Trash City, under the town dump, to visit him before he dies. Nurse Aunt Lily, says he will be all right, but he is badly bruised and hurting. It will take some time to get well. The Littles decide to ask Nick's friends to come and see him. Mr. Little, Tom, and Lucy hitch hike a ride on the garbage truck to Trash City. They learn that Nick's friends are twin children, Winkie and Tip, who live in the Trash City Home for Children. The twins had been seperated and lost from their parents when they were babies. Major Nick saved their lives and is fond of them. Everyone gets ready for the return trip in a gas model airplane flown by Cousin Dinky and a glider flown by his wife, Della. In the middle of getting off the ground they see a trash cat prowling toward them. Is there time to escape?
