Tiny children don't attend school the way we do. Their teacher, Beta Gogg, visits them every month to see how well they have done in learning a subject they chose. Ms. Gogg helps them to choose another one for the next month. The tiny students then travel to the big children's school when the big kids have left for their summer vacation. The tinies study for two weeks under Ms. Gogg's tutelage using a big schoolroom with its many useful tools for learning. At the beginning of the story Tom and Lucy are working on a gerbil science project at home using Henry Bigg's animals. Mrs. Bigg unexpectedly comes into the room and picks up the gerbil's cage before Tom and Lucy can get out of it. She takes it to Henry's classroom so he and his friends can enjoy the gerbils for the last week of school. Hiding in the gerbil cage's wood chips, Tom and Lucy face frightening problems trying to find their way back home.
