Fresh, fun math games with easy-to-learn rules
The book comes with four colored dice to play 25 math games. The games cover basic computation, advanced computation (including fractions, decimals, and pre-algebra), probability and statistics, and geometry. All the games have suggestions for easier or harder levels and fun variations of play to challenge students of all abilities. The rules for each game are written for children to understand and printed on handy reproducibles. Most of the games can be played by individuals or small groups; a few involve the entire class or a large group. Here are some of my favorites: > Zulu Dice Throw: Use addition to determine your "fortune." The game is based on an ancient Zulu bone-throwing game. After analyzing their results, children discover the "fortunes" are not scientific but are general statements that can apply to anyone. > X-Ray Vision: Use patterns to instantly determine the values of the hidden sides of dice. > Catherine and Napoleon: Practice greater than (as in Catherine the Great) and less than (as in the diminutive Napoleon). > Mole Patrol: Roll the dice and use divisors of the numbers to burrow out of a mole tunnel. > Seesaw: Use pre-algebra skills (and luck) to balance a seesaw equation.> Gonzo: Roll the dice and say "Gonzo" as soon as you spot a pattern in the numbers. Good practice with pattern recognition and sets. > Miner's Luck: Roll dice to collect diamonds (points on the dice), but don't get too greedy as a roll of 6 can wipe out your stash. Probability and risk assessment. > Galileo's Challenge: Solve a probability problem that vexed Galileo! > Moth and Flame: Roll the dice to generate coordinates and flutter around a Cartesian grid. The object is to get as close to the "flame" (0,0) as you can without landing on it.
