Personal thoughts on writing the book
Being a visual learner, "left-brained" and a "gold" personality who seeks order and structure, graphic organizers have always intrigued me! I like to graphically represent or map out a story as I read it. I often lecture or give a talk from a graphic that highlights key information & ideas. I've always believed in the power of graphic organizers as learning tools. So, I asked two friends, Linda and Marcia, who also use and teach with graphic organizers, to begin collecting only the best examples. We did a lot of background reading about the theory and research that undergird graphic organizers, and we did some of our own research (which we continue to do with our teacher education students and K-12 students in area schools). This resulted in our first book, GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS (1995).
Readers of that book asked for more ideas, so we bagan a second collaboration. (By the way, we've become even better friends in the process!) We created and collected new organizers and put together step-by-step instructions and 50 reproducible (8x11) templates to use in reading, writing, math, science & social studies. We asked our students and teachers we knew to try them and they reported their successes and problems. We revised our ideas and the organizers, and finally produced this book. Even tho it is identified gr. 4-8, the graphic organizers are adaptable to high school and the primary grades.
I am continually energized about the possibilities for using graphic organizers as learning tools! It is exciting to work with teachers who want to learn how to more effectively use graphic organizers in their teaching, curriculum planning and assessment. And, we're continuing to explore... we're currently looking at the "graphic organizer think-aloud" as an effective metacognitive tool for teaching and learning. If you have creative ideas or examples of how you and/or your students use graphic organizers in unique ways, we would be happy to include them and your stories in our next book! (That's right Linda & Marcia---are you ready for BOOK III???)
