This book is an introduction to one of the main topics of modern combinatorics - the theory of combinatorial designs - emphasizing its applications in coding theory. Combinatorial designs have been the subject of recent study because of their numerous applications in various branches of science: statistical planning of experiments, pattern recognition, construction of optimal error-correcting codes and the provision of reliability in the transmission of digital information. A minimal mathematical background, requiring familiarity only with a standard undergraduate curriculum, is assumed. The book is addressed to students and researchers in discrete mathematics, and to researchers from other areas wishing to learn about combinatorial designs and their applications. The treatment of codes should also be of interest to engineers working on data protection. The author is a member of the Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians and won the prize for young mathematicians of the Balkan Union of Mathematics in 1980, and the national prize for young scientists in 1986.
