Synopsis
This work, first written by the late Charles Coulson in 1941, aims to introduce students to the basic ideas underlying linear wave motion and to consider as many different types of wave motion as possible. This edition, revised by Alan Jeffrey, has retained as much as possible of the original structure and text. New material includes a consideration of nonlinear wave phenomena, an area of study which has greatly expanded since the time of the first edition. To keep this topic at a level compatible with the rest of the book, the illustrations used are confined to fluid mechanics, since only there is the structure of problems sufficiently simple to enable them to be formulated without extensive background information.
