There is a growing need for the design process to be communicated to the client in a 3D design format right from the concept stage. This text builds on an assumed basic knowledge of 2D AutoCAD to build up the user's competency in 3D AutoCAD through a series of structured progressive exercises which contribute to a final rendered project.
The book is split into three main parts covering- an introduction to 3D design, exercises in surface/solid modelling, and a 3D design project. It is not intended to be be an exhaustive guide to 3D drawing using AutoCAD.
Part One contains a series of structured exercises that build up a wide range of competencies in 3D design. The exercises are related to the needs of education and industry by getting the user to think how the techniques used can help make more efficient use of the package and time.
Part Two contains a series of progressive practical exercises that build on the techniques introduced in part one. Exercises include elevation and thickness, viewports for orthographic projections, perspective views, basic suface/solid primitives and Boolean operations.
Part Three applies the full range of 3D design competencies acquired earlier in the book to a realistic practical design project. The project also extends knowledge of basic optical theory, applies design solutions to practical problems and realises design concepts by manufacturing the project using a range of de-skilled solutions. There are certain details omitted in the design project to encourage users to think how they will overcome the particular problems presented. The book concludes with the rendering of the model to produce a photorealistic image, which is shown on the front cover.
Key features
* can be used with any release of AutoCAD, including Release 14
* teaches competency through the use of command lines rather than icons
* contains a series of progressive practical exercises building up to a complete rendered model
* uses results from exercises from earlier on in the book to build up the final project
* certain details in the design project are omitted to enhance student’s decision making skills in design
* assumes a familiarity with 2D AutoCAD
A Practical Guide to AutoCAD 3D Design is an essential text for students on all engineering courses who need to build up thier competency in 3D drawing using AutoCAD; from NVQ and GNVQ courses through degree courses, to the professional user.
