This is the first electronic presentation of the first great dictionary of the English language. Samuel Johnson produced his famous Dictionary in 1755 and issued a revised Fourth Edition in 1773. Now, a CD-ROM makes accessible these two main Editions alongside each other, along with digitised images of the original pages.
This is a full size facsimile edition in two volumes of the first edition of Samuel Johnson's "A Dictionary of the English Language" which was published in 1755. It contains 40,000 entries and 116,000 illustrative quotations. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was a critic, poet, lexicographer and essayist and was a pre-eminent literary figure of the later 18th century. It is published by Longman, one of the dictionary's original publishers and is a true facsimile - full text size and in two volumes like the original. The dictionary is bound in Cabra red bonded leather with raised spin bands, foil blocking in old gold and dark green. The double volume slip case is in dark red library Buckram. In addition there are two specially commissioned introductory essays "The Genesis of Johnson's Dictionary" by Dr David Fleeman, a Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford and "The Lexicographic Achievement of Johnson" by Dr Brian O'Kill. A facsimile of "the Plan of a Dictionary of the English Language" by Samuel Johnson is included.
