Synopsis
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are routinely used in government and private agencies for handling information about many aspects of science and society. Volume one begins with an overview of GIS providing the context and discussing the major intellectual, organizational and technical forces which influence its development. The second part of volume one concerns itself with the nature of spatial data, the technical, functional, organizational and display issues of GIS. Volume two looks at the develoment of GIS through a review of a wide variety of geographical and thematic areas. It also includes a summary of both volumes and reflects on the future of GIS.
