Synopsis

Orthogonal polynomials are widely applied in approximation theory, numerical analysis, combinatorics, statistics, and mathematical physics. There has been an extensive programme to determine the asymptotic behaviour (as the degree of the polynomial approaches infinity) of orthogonal polynomials associated with weights on the whole real line. This research note forms part of this prgramme, and considers primarily Erdos weights. In an appendix, pointwise asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials and Christoffel functions for Freud weights are established. The book should be of interest to researchers and graduate students involved in approximation theory, orthogonal polynomials, harmonic and Fourier analysis, complex analysis, numerical analysis (especially quadrature and interpolation).
