Synopsis
Jerry Rickenbacker longs to put the past behind him and start over, to escape the cycle of family dysfunction, poverty, and crime of his upbringing in 1950s rural Indiana. After getting sucked into the vortex of a Chicago drug syndicate upon his release from prison in 1983, he seizes an opportunity to break free, to walk away from everything he has ever known, everything that has defined him. Assuming the name James Smith, he sets about to create the quiet life of his dreams in Nova Scotia, with a loving wife and family in a house that he builds with his own two hands. But as the facade he constructs for himself crumbles of its own weight, Jeremiah Rickenbacker is forced to confront disturbing truths about himself and about the limitations we all face to define who we are and shape who we want to be, and ultimately about fate itself.
