Synopsis

Angels We Have Heard is a collection of weekly newspaper columns, The Shepherd's Call, dedicated to observing God's glory in everyday events. Following the teaching example of Jesus, the articles are word pictures drawn from ordinary life. They are simple, poignant and brief. Sometimes the piece emanates from a simple event such as a runaway dirigible or a person who refuses to change his watch to daylight savings time. At other times, the column springs from a current event or concern. Occasionally, there is an imaginary account of a happening among the angels which speaks to a spiritual need or truth. Folk seem to like the angel stories best; hence the title, Angels We Have Heard.

To make the book user friendly, the collection is organized around both the Christian and secular calendars.

Through the years, readers have requested The Shepherd's Call be offered in a bound volume. This book is a response to those many requests. Angels We Have Heard is an inspiring book that one can keep and read forever. It makes an excellent gift, perfect for Christmas or anytime.

About the Author

Wade Paris was born on Burgundy Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, more years ago than he likes to remember. Due primarily to his father's occupation, he grew up in seven southern states, finishing high school in Meridian, Mississippi. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Union University, Jackson, Tennessee; a Master of Divinity Degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina, and a Doctor of Ministries Degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.

Called to preach at the age of eight, he went on to serve as a pastor/missionary for more than 50 years. He accepted his first pastorate at 20, Western Valley Baptist Church, Covington, Tennessee followed by the Johnson Grove Baptist Church, Alamo, Tennessee. In seminary, he was pastor of Jesse Howell Baptist Chapel, a mission of First Baptist Church, Durham, North Carolina. Following seminary, he returned to Jackson, Tennessee, and served as pastor of the Liberty Grove Baptist Church. From there he moved to Missouri in 1967 to be pastor of the Murray Lane Baptist Church, Sikeston, and eleven years later to become pastor of the Swope Park Baptist Church in Kansas City where he served for nearly 17 years. He left Kansas City to become an area missionary for nine years in Northeast Missouri in Kirksville.

Pastor Paris, as he likes to be called if a "handle" is needed, is a husband of 54 years, a father of four and grandfather of nine. In retirement, he and his wife, Nellie Frances, moved to Harrisonville, Missouri just south of Kansas City, where they are centrally located to all the children.

Angels We Have Heard is Dr. Paris' first book, but writing is not new to him. Throughout his ministry, he has written newspaper/magazine columns and weekly sermons. For a time, the weekly sermons were mailed to more than 200 pastors and friends by request.

When he retired in 2005, he wrote eight personal goals in his prayer journal. The last goal was to accomplish more for the Kingdom in retirement than he did in all his 50 years of active ministry. He says, "It is unlikely I will live long enough to realize that goal, but if I can leave a legacy of writing, the ministry will continue after my passing. Perhaps the goal can be reached posthumously. Angels We Have Heard is the first step toward that legacy."
